State funeral on November 3

Oct 26, 2010

November 3 is the date set for the state funeral of the late Honourable Prime Minister David John Howard Thompson.

Making the announcement last night, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Maxine McClean, outlined that the 9.30 a.m., a service will be held at the Kensington Oval, following a musical prelude commencing at 9 a.m.

The funeral convoy will then make its way to the graveyard of the St. John Parish Church where the late Prime Minister will be laid to rest.

“Kensington Oval has been selected because thousands of Barbadians have expressed their desire to participate in the state funeral,” McClean disclosed, before outlining that entry to both sites would be by ticket only.

School children and citizens are expected to line the route, the details of which are yet to be finalised.

Meanwhile, park and ride arrangements will be announced by the Government Information Service later this week.

McClean stated there will be five days for the public to view the late Leader’s body, starting this Thursday at 10 a.m. for the Governor General and former and present Members of Parliament on the top floor of Parliament’s East Wing.

Prime Minister David Thompson’s body will then lay in repose in the downstairs hall for the commencement of viewing by the general public.

This continues on Friday October 29, from 9 a.m. within the halls of Parliament and then at the Combermere School at 2 p.m.; on Saturday October 30, at the Democratic Labour Party Headquarters, and on November 1 at the St. John Parish Church.

On November 2, the late Prime Minister’s body will return to Parliament for the final day of viewing.
Several condolence books will also be placed in these areas.

In terms of the closure of businesses on that day, McClean said that Government will be requesting that such establishments remain closed until at least 1 p.m.

Meanwhile, schools are to be closed on that day.
