Kamla reels out trip benefits

Aug 23, 2010

The 2010/2011 budget date is Wednesday, September 8, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said last night, as she briefed the media on her trip to New York. The announcement was made yesterday at a news conference at the VIP Lounge at Piarco International Airport.

Persad-Bissessar said talks with stakeholders would take place this week. She declined to give hints on what the budget would include. Regarding the postponed Cabinet workshop, she said it was now scheduled for September 1. Last Saturday, Finance Minister Winston Dookeran said a budget deficit should be expected in the 2010/2011 fiscal package, but that it would not be “as large as we had first anticipated.”

Already sections of the business community have listed the measures that they wanted the Government to address. The Greater Tunapuna Chamber of Industry and Commerce has called for crime and flooding to be dealt with. The American Chamber of T&T (AmCham) wants the Government to deal with the issue of crime because its members were spending thousands of dollars in security and security equipment. The Government is also expected to fulfill some of its campaign promises as well, among them the purchase of laptops for children entering Form One at secondary schools.
