New TSTT board by July

Jun 09, 2010

A new TSTT board is expected to be established by mid-July said Public Utilities Minister, Emmanuel George yesterday.

In a telephone interview, George said he would have liked to have a new board by the end of June but because of the length of the hiring process, it would have to be at a later date. “We would have liked to get people on the board by the end of the month but the process is so long, we have to first sift through a lot of CVs (Curriculum Vitae) and then before anyone is appointed, it would have to go to Cabinet before it is approved,” he said. He also revealed that members of the boards at both TTEC and WASA have also offered their resignations.

The minister, who has met with most of the unions that fall under his ministry, said he has to find a way to address their many concerns. “All of these important issues would be addressed quickly, but people have to be a little bit patient, I do not want to be taking decisions that are not properly considered. I have a lot of documentation to go through so that I could come up to speed with anything before any concrete decisions are made,” he said.

On Monday, George met with members of the Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) including president, Joseph Remy. In the meeting, Remy said they discussed a number of issues including the Beyonce concert and most recently their claims that management at the Telecommunications Services of TT (TSTT) were paid bonuses in excess of $70 million on the night of the General Election, May 24. The Minister indicated he would deal with the matter.

Remy said they were not going to rush the minister in investigating these matters as they understood he was now settling in to office. “We would give the minister the opportunity of time but we want him to know that we are not going to give him too much of time because these matters have been going on for too long and they need to be dealt with,” he said.
