Consultations on Securities Bill

Jun 11, 2012

The Trinidad and Tobago Securities and Exchange Commission (TTSEC) will be hosting public consultations for new governing legislation for the Securities Industry, the Securities Bill 2012.

The Bill is to be laid in Parliament for debate shortly, but before presentation, the TTSEC will host consultations to receive feedback from stakeholders, including citizens, market actors, investors, legal fraternity and other organisations, on the proposed changes.

This draft Bill is intended to replace the existing Securities Industry Act, 1995 and seeks to strengthen the present regulatory framework in order to provide greater protection for investors and other market participants. This enhanced protection will be achieved through the implementation of improved disclosure and transparency, more sophisticated market surveillance, enforcement and the promotion of regulatory cooperation at all levels, the TTSEC said in a release yesterday.

Consultations begin today in Trinidad at the Yara Auditorium, Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business, Mt Hope, from 8.30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tobago consultations will be held tomorrow from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Mt Irvine Bay Hotel, Mt Irvine.
