TCL to begin importing cement

Mar 02, 2012

Trinidad Cement Ltd yesterday announced it will import cement from Barbados and Jamaica as strike action kept its Claxton Bay plant shut down yesterday.
In a statement, the local cement producer said it had arranged to import cement from its Arawak plant in Barbados and its Caribbean Cement subsidiary in Jamaica to minimise the “impact of the current industrial impasse”.

TCL said it will distribute the product throughout Trinidad and Tobago so that customers have access.

Hardware dealers in both Trinidad and Tobago have complained about cement shortages in the past few days.

The Oilfields Workers' Trade Union (OWTU) said it had contacted trade unions in Barbados and Jamaica, to ask that no cement be sent to Trinidad during the duration of the strike at TCL.

Some 600 workers with TCL went on strike on Monday after a breakdown in negotiations following the union's rejection of the company's 6.5 per cent wage increase over the three year period from 2009-2011.

The union is seeking a 16 per cent increase.
