Jamaica Chamber of Commerce appoints new president

Nov 05, 2014

Former paint executive and chartered accountant Warren McDonald has taken over as president of the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce (JCC), six years after he first joined the JCC executive.

He succeeds Francis 'Paco' Kennedy who had a heart condition and passed away last month, just weeks into his second term as president of the JCC. McDonald was his vice-president and with his ascension to the top position, the executive has similarly been reshaped, effective October 31.

The position of first vice-president is now held by Oliver Chen; Cathrine Kennedy is second VP, and Paul B. Scott is third VP.

September elections

Previously, arising from the elections in September, there were four sitting VPs: Cathrine, who is Francis Kennedy's daughter, was third VP; Scott was second VP and Chen was fourth VP. No one was named to the latter position.

"We produce innovative, relevant and insightful business development-oriented programming, every day, and our public service impacts Jamaica and we hope, the world far beyond where we live. This is a terrific opportunity that any leader would welcome," said McDonald in a statement from the JCC.

"I look forward to building on the strong foundation our beloved 'Paco' and other past leaders of the JCC created," he said.

McDonald's business career has spanned the sugar and auditing sectors, which preceded his near two-decade run with Jamaica's largest paint company, Berger Paints Jamaica, from 1994 to 2013.

He was a director on the board of Scotia Group Jamaica and its commercial banking arm up to last year. He now sits on the board of CUNA Caribbean Insurance Society Limited.

McDonald was educated at the University of the West Indies, where he studied economics, and have done other management courses at business school at Harvard and Columbia and at the Cranfield School of Management.

He is a fellow of both the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants of the United Kingdom and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Jamaica.
