Unemployment down to 3.2 per cent

T&T’s unemployment rate stood at 3.2 per cent for the first quarter of 2014, down frrom 3.8 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2013.

Data in the Labour Force Bulletin for the first quarter of 2014, which has just been released by the Central Statistical Office, shows that the unemployment rate among males decreased from 3.4 per cent to 2.8 per cent, while females decreased from 4.3 per cent to 3.5 per cent.

Compared to the same quarter a year earlier, the data showed a decrease in the unemployment rate from 3.7 per cent to 3.1 per cent, with male unemployment decreasing from three per cent to 2.8 per cent and the female unemployment rate down from 4.7 per cent to 3.5 per cent.

Increases in the unemployment rate were reported in specific industries including petroleum and gas, other manufacturing and community, social and personal services.

The country’s labour force registered 664 300 persons at the end of the first quarter of 2014—an increase of 10,800 or 1.6 per cent compared to the fourth quarter 2013.

This increase in the labour force was reflected both among males which grew by 4,200 or 1.1 per cent, and females which increased by 6,600 or 2.4 per cent compared with the previous quarter.
