CSME hope for stock exchanges

Dec 20, 2005

EXPECT cross border investment flows to pick up once the Caribbean Single Market and Economy is up and running next year.

This optimism of more intra-regional investment is coming from Dr. Ashwell Thomas, an official of Goddard Enterprises Limited, a Barbadian conglomerate with investments across the region including South and Central America.

"I am pinning my hope for this on the regional stock exchange that will become a reality very soon," Dr. Thomas told Business Monday.

He said that the regional body which has been long in coming will be able to deal with some of the problem cross border investors experience.

"My understanding is that those working on the establishment of the regional body are in the process of setting up a stock exchange regulatory body to deal with these issues," said the official. He could not say how far advanced that project is. The CSME is expected to come on stream next month to usher in a new phase in regional integration.

Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica are involved in plans for the establishment of the regional body.
