Apr 23, 2015

THE Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers’ Association yesterday appointed Dr Rolph Balgobin as its new President. The appointment was announced at the association’s 59th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Business Breakfast held at the Hilton Trinidad and Conference Centre. Dr Balgobin replaces Nicholas Lok Jack, who held the position for two years.

In addition to being an Independent Senator, Dr Balgobin is President and Group Chief Executive Officer of the Electrical Industries Group and Executive Chairman of Quicksilver Convenience Limited. He is the NGC Distinguished Fellow in Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of the West Indies (The UWI) and a director of the Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business. He also serves on the ratings committee of the Caribbean Rating Agency, CARICRIS.

Dr Balgobin is also a columnist at the Trinidad Express newspaper. He has previously served as Chairman of the Point Lisas Industrial Port Development Company, and as a director of the Telecommunications Company of Trinidad and Tobago (TSTT), the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago and Youth Business Trinidad and Tobago. He led the technical team which pulled together the Vision 2020 National Strategic Plan for Trinidad and Tobago. Dr Balgobin holds degrees from The UWI, the University of Cambridge, Manchester University and a postgraduate diploma in Corporate Governance from the ACCA, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

In an interview following the announcement of his appointment, Dr Balgobin said the areas of strategic importance for the TTMA embraced advocacy, making sure the association held relevant events, encouraging new manufacturers, and encouraging people to choose manufacturing as a career and as a preferred economic activity “as opposed to buying and selling.”
