Arawak cuts

Dec 08, 2014

Arawak Cement Company at Checker Hall, St Lucy, is about to make a major cut in its staff.

Reliable sources told the SATURDAY SUN yesterday that after weeks of speculation, rumours, partial explanations from officials locally and visits from top brass of the parent company in Trinidad, officials brought in counsellors from Network Services yesterday to begin preparing staff for the separations.

While it could not be confirmed how many workers would be going, sources said it looked like as much as 40 per cent of the 205 people on the payroll could be jobless by the time the retrenchment and restructuring exercise is over.

The apparent good news for staff, the source said, however, was the “assurance” recently given by Alejandro Ramirez, acting chief executive officer of Trinidad Cements Limited, owners of Arawak, that the plant would not be closing at this time, as had been strongly rumoured.
