Historic moment for Carib Cement, TCL Group

Sep 11, 2008

The recent lighting of the state-of-the-art precalciner, dry process kiln (kiln 5) at Caribbean Cement Company Ltd in Kingston, Jamaica, has signalled another milestone for the TCL Group.

The new kiln is part of the group’s extensive expansion and modernisation programme, which is currently being undertaken across its facilities at a cost of more than US$164 million.

Kiln 5 will continue to be commissioned over the upcoming weeks until it reaches its optimum capacity.

When fully commissioned, Caribbean Cement Company will have the capacity to increase its clinker production from approximately 600,000 to just under 1,000,000 tonnes/year.

Clinker is an intermediate product in the production of cement which when cooled and ground with a small proportion of gypsum and other additives produces cement.

A new cement mill is also being constructed at Caribbean Cement Company with completion scheduled for March 2009.

The current upgrades across the TCL Group are geared towards enabling the company to better meet the region’s capacity needs and compete effectively in a globalised environment.
