Jamaica Stock Exchange Launches Mobile App, Aims To Triple Market Investors

Jul 06, 2016

The Jamaica Stock Exchange's (JSE) mobile application is now up and running.

General manager of the JSE Group, Marlene Street Forrest, says the rollout of the app aligns with the push to grow the number of persons who invest and do business via the stock market.

"Our delivery today is part of a campaign to continue the conversation with investors and potential investors of all ages and stages and to move the market from the five per cent now investing in the market to 15 per cent by 2020," Street Forrest said as she maintained that while the target was ambitious, it was attainable.

The JSE boss said the app was in development for just over one year and the information available is similar to that found on the JSE's website. She is predicting that the app will be a useful tool in market access and decision making since the average investor will be in a better position to be a part of a key sector of Jamaica's economy.

"The app complements the other portals we currently used to provide information to you and we're confident that it will drive the number of persons who are interested in the market and improve the timeliness and capacity of investors in their decision-making process," said Street Forrest at the launch in New Kingston on Tuesday.

It will support "efforts at financial literacy and inclusion by bringing the information to the fingertips of all persons", she added. The JSE mobile app is available on Google Play store for download to Android smartphones. The Apple version is now in the testing phase.

Also speaking at the launch, Minister of Mining, Energy and Technology, Dr Andrew Wheatley, was complimentary of the stock exchange's achievements, including its assessment as the top market last year.

"Today's launch of the Jamaica Stock Exchange's mobile app is not only consistent with the strong brand that the organisation has established. It represents vision and foresight and sets the trend for other businesses to emulate," Wheatley said, while commenting on the functionality and usefulness of the JSE app.
