NEOPHYTE CEMENT SUPPLIER Rock Hard Cement has felt the might of the Arawak Cement Company’s big brother, Cemex Limited of Mexico.
After upsetting Arawak’s three-decades-old monopoly of the local market by importing a huge shipment of the commodity from Portugal late last year, forcing an almost 50 per cent fall in the local price, Cemex struck back, apparently blocking Rock Hard’s access to the Portuguese market.
Now Rock Hard is facing another stumbling block. A shipment of cement it acquired in Turkey, which the company has been trying to get into Trinidad to challenge the dominance of Trinidad Cement Limited (TCL), the owner of Arawak, is stuck on the Port of Spain docks.
According to construction sources here, that shipment of cement arrived in Trinidad last weekend and faced immediate opposition from TCL.
