CASTRIES, St. Lucia, Monday June 6, 2016 – By tonight, St. Lucians will have an idea of whether the St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) or the United Workers Party (UWP) will govern the country for the next five years.
Voters have until 6 p.m. to cast their ballots, 11 and a half hours after polling stations opened across the island.
Election Day began with heavy rains, but Opposition Leader Allen Chastanet urged St. Lucians not to let the weather keep them away from the polls.
“The weather is not the best today and maybe it will not improve much today. However, I am still urging all St. Lucians to go out, get an umbrella, get a raincoat or get something to protect you from the weather and go out to vote,” he said.
“Don’t let the weather or anything thing prevent you from exercising your democratic right – a right that many of our forefathers died for…”
In his last appeal to the electorate in a televised message last night, Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony reminded citizens of the progress his SLP has made and the promises of more to come if it is returned to government.
About 160, 465 people are eligible to vote in today’s elections.
Missions from the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union are observing the process.
