Jamaica’s 17th general election since 1944 is set for February 25 when voters will decide whether to give the ruling People’s National Party (PNP) a second consecutive term in office or install the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) which in December 2011 suffered the indignity of being the first Government since Independence to be voted out of office after just four years.
The election date was announced by Prime Minister and PNP President Portia Simpson Miller at a mass rally in Half-Way-Tree last night, ending weeks of speculation and setting in train what will be a blistering sprint to the finsh line in what is easily one of the shortest general election campaigns ever.
Nomination Day is February 9, four days after Parliament will be dissolved.
